The Chazon Ish writes in Emunah Ubitachon, perek Beis:
There is a widespread error in the hearts of many regarding the concept of bitachon. The term "bitachon" has come to be interpreted as an obligation to believe that in every situation of uncertainty, where two outcomes are possible—one good and one bad—a person must believe that the good outcome will occur. And if he fears the possibility of the bad outcome, this is considered a lack of bitachon. However, this understanding is fundamentally mistaken. As long as the future has not been revealed through prophecy, the future remains undecided, and who can know the judgments of Hashem and His recompense? Rather, bitachon is the belief that there is no randomness in the world, and that everything that happens under the sun is by His decree, may He be blessed.
Common wisdom has it that the Chazon Ish is saying that to be a bote'ach is to know that Hashem is running everything and that since He is a meitiv, therefore everything must be for the best, even when it does not look like it. Bitachon, according to this understanding, does not mean that you are confident that the tzara you are experiencing will be met with a yeshua, but rather accepting that whatever outcome occurs is just and ultimately for the good. While this does describe a basic level of emunah, this is not what the Chazon Ish is saying.
Indeed, this reading of the Chazon Ish is a grave mistake that not only results in a fundamental misunderstanding of what Hashem requires from us, suggesting that He does not expect us to be hoping, trusting, and expecting His yeshua, but also borders on being motzei laz on Hakadosh Baruch Hu. To understand the Chazon Ish in this way is to assume that there are only two paths to take - either to completely accept the tzara and have no expectation of it working out in the end, or to fasten on to whatever specific arrangement of events your (relatively) puny mind is able to come up with and backfill Hashem’s omnipotence as justification.
But in fact there is a third path, and one that our divrei Chazal is stuffed to the gills with - expecting, anticipating that Hashem will end the tzara, but entirely leaving to Him the manifestation of that yeshua. The Chazon Ish is not speaking to this path, but against those who fasten on to whatever outcome they have convinced themselves of.
Let us review a small collection of mikoros that support this thesis, namely, that our relationship with Hashem is not merely one of quietly accepting our fate, but that instead He wants us to rely and expect that He will save the day - in whatever way He sees fit:
Shemos 14:13
And Moshe said to the people, “Do not fear. Stand firm and see the salvation of Hashem that He will perform for you today—for the Egyptians whom you have seen today, you will never see again.”

Gemara in Shabbos 89b:
Hashem said to them: “Since you have cast yourselves upon Me — ‘Though your sins be like scarlet, they shall become white as snow.’”
Gemara in Menachos 29b
As Rabbi Yehudah HaNasi asked of Rabbi Ami: What is the meaning of the verse (Yeshayahu 26:4): “Trust in Hashem forever, for in Kah Hashem is the Rock of all worlds”? He replied: Anyone who places his trust in the Holy One, blessed be He — Has for himself a refuge both in this world and in the World to Come.
Maharal in N’siv Habitachon
Because of his bitachon in Hashem, that very matter — which appeared to be bad — is transformed into good for him.
M’kisvei Hagriz M’salant
This is the special power of bitachon: that Hashem fulfills the will of a person who trusts in Him with a complete heart, and He provides him with all his needs — wherever he may be and at all times, even if he is not a tzaddik.
The trait of bitachon does not depend on a person’s merits — for even if one is not worthy, as long as he strengthens his trust in Hashem, the power of bitachon protects him, and Hashem, in His kindness, deals with him compassionately.
Shaarei Teshuva - 3:31
"When you go out to war… and you see horse and chariot, a people more numerous than you—do not fear them" (Devarim 20:1).
We are hereby instructed that when a person sees that distress is approaching, the salvation of Hashem should be in his heart, and he should trust in it.
As it says, “Surely His salvation is near to those who fear Him” (Tehillim 85:10), and likewise, “Who are you that you should fear mortal man who shall die?” (Yeshayahu 51:12).
Sefer Hamaspik:
The explanation of the matter is that bitachon resides in the heart—that the heart leans and relies on Hashem, exalted be He, for the fulfillment of one’s desires: to be protected from harm or to attain some benefit, etc.
Gemara in bava basra 91a says
And rashbam says:
On the pasuk in tehillim 50:15 that says:
And Rashi there says:
Beis Halevi - maamar al bitachon
At the time of judgment, they ask a person: "Did you anticipate the redemption?"
Meaning — Did he wait for the salvation and not give up hope, and did he strengthen his bitachon in every detail of hardship or challenge that came upon him?
Yalkut Tehilim Pey Ches
Knesses Yisrael said before the Holy One, blessed be He: “I have no salvation except through You, and my eyes hope only to You.” Hashem replied: “Since this is so, I will save you,” as it is said: “Yisrael is saved by Hashem with an everlasting salvation; you shall not be ashamed or disgraced forever and ever.” (Yeshayahu 45:17)
Zechor L’miriam from the Chofetz Chaim Perek Chuf
The Holy One, blessed be He Himself — who is the very source of mercy and compassion — when a person truly places his trust in Him, Hashem will certainly help him and save him from all harm.
Listen to Rav Chatzkel in Cheilek gimel, page 127:
This is what is stated in the prophet (Yeshayahu 50): “Who among you... walks in darkness and has no light? Let him trust in the name of Hashem and lean upon his God.”
This is the level of bitachon: when a person finds himself in total darkness, and he sees no hope that his path will be illuminated—nonetheless, he must be confident as if the salvation is already present before him.
Because the essence of bitachon is to not rely on circumstances or means, but on Hashem, the Omnipotent One. If so, then the absence of visible causes is not a reason to lack bitachon.
And this is what the Chovos HaLevavos added when he wrote that “means are never withheld from Him at any time or in any place,” as you know from the story of Eliyahu with the ravens, and with the widow and her cake of coals and flask of water.
Perhaps you will say that we are not reading any of these sources correctly, and certainly the Chazon Ish had a better understanding of them than we do, but here’s the thing - if you are willing to entertain the possibility that you are simply not reading and understanding the words correctly, why in the world are you so sure you are reading the Chazon Ish correctly?
Bottom line - what the Chazon Ish is saying is that to think that you know how things should turn out is to deny Hashem's management. He is saying that people who think bitachon is about focusing on the the certainty of your outcome as the avoda, of convincing yourself that what you want to happen is what will happen, and justifying the feasibility of this outcome by pointing to Hashem's omnipotence, these people are making a mistake, because they are skipping over what bitachon is about and instead fastening on to a side effect. bitachon is about an awareness of Hashem and His awesomeness, His love and epic management. we are trusting that He's got it and He's going to bring the tzara to a delicious conclusion that we'll be thrilled with, were we in possession of all the facts. If we are zoche, we'll even get the nechama of understanding the purpose of the tzara itself, on its own, aside from a heichi timza for bitachon.
This is not a new idea. This is what we see clearly from Torah, Nevi’im and Kesuvim, on down through the generations, with all our Mesorah crying out with one voice - bichol dirachecha dei’eihu. And in response? Vihu yiyasher orchosecha.
That all being said, it is of course important to note that bitachon is not something you hear about in a shiur and strap on like a new hat. It’s a lifelong avodah, a climb up an infinite ladder. As we grow, we must be brutally honest with ourselves: Am I trusting in Hashem—or just trying to escape my fear by denying the tzarah altogether? Real bitachon doesn’t mean shutting your eyes, but opening them wider, learning to see through the illusion that is teva.
Also, as a final note, the Chovos Halevavos does indeed describe higher levels of bitachon, where a person has so completely surrendered his own preferences that he’s genuinely content with whatever Hashem sends. For such a person, there is no tzarah—there is only Hashem. In that rarefied place, bitachon may no longer mean expecting a yeshuah. This level is reserved for the yichidei segula, as he writes. For the rest of us, Hashem is waiting for us to cast upon Him all our problems.
